"Averlee – say hi!"
McKenzie Korte, Averlee's Mom: "She was born at 30 weeks, she did great the first two days, and then the second day of life she had a lung hemorrhage. She wasn’t supposed to live. She had other plans."
After five months in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and two weeks at the Transitional Care https://www.cincinnatichildrens.org/s...
Center, or TCC, at the main Burnet campus, Averlee Korte was one step closer to home when transferred to TCC, at the Liberty campus in Butler County.
As her lungs continued to develop, the tracheostomy tube and ventilator worked in tandem, just as Averlee’s Mom and grandmother, Gigi, learned as a team how to care for Averlee when she’d eventually go home.
McKenzie Korte: "They’ve showed me really everything, settings on ventilators, setting on her cpap, just a lot of stuff to reassure me that I’m not alone. I’m not the only mom who’s ever had to go through this, and made me a stronger person."
Angie Korte, Averlee's grandmother: “When they first talked about TCC, it was like, 'Oh, they’re going to teach us to do this stuff? What?' But, yeah, it’s transitional, so you can go home.”
Ashlee Lonnemann, Clinical Manager, TCC Liberty: "Here at Liberty, we are just like the base unit. We are working with patients and families to educate them on how to care for the complex needs of their child when they take them home. We want them to be successful in the care at home so they feel confident in what they’re doing.”
McKenzie Korte: "We love TCC. It’s like home – home away from home. It’s more laid back here. There’s not as many patients here. When I’m not here I know that nurses are taking care of her."
Lonnemann: "We really pride ourselves in being a smaller unit, a little bit more intimate of a unit. We have the same staff at both campuses, they float between campuses. So, it’s the same level of quality care provided at both campuses, it’s just a smaller portion of it."
In addition to constant monitoring of all patients, Liberty also offers amenities and conveniences for families.
McKenzie Korte: "Parking is so much easier to find here. The restaurants around here. The friendly staff, the doctors, just everything. We love it.”
Lonnemann: "In addition to the bright windows, we still have things like the chapel downstairs and we have a gift shop downstairs and we have a pharmacy and it’s all a lot smaller so they see a lot less people so it’s always a familiar face, it’s always somebody welcoming you."
Angie Korte: "She’s getting ready to go home. She’s happy. She’s healthy. It’s been an incredible journey and I thank them so much."
McKenzie Korte: "It’s amazing. Miracles do really happen."
