Nitrogen (N): This is the most vital nutrient for promoting tiller formation and survival. Nitrogen deficiency at this stage results in poor tillering, fewer leaves, and smaller ear heads, which significantly limits yield potential.
Phosphorus (P): Phosphorus is crucial for early plant energy transfer, cell division, and especially strong root growth. A sufficient supply of phosphate at the tillering stage ensures robust root systems that can efficiently take up other nutrients and water, which in turn improves the number and survival rate of tillers.

Management Considerations
To maximize effective tillering, nutrients must be applied at the right time and in a balanced manner.
Timing: Nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium are often applied at or before sowing, with the remaining nitrogen often split into applications at the crown root initiation (CRI) and tillering/jointing stages to match peak demand periods.
