Major Modes Unlocked! For Day 11 of the Guitar Advent Calendar, I'm showing you a unique Chord Technique, the Frank Gambale Method.

The key concept here is Frank Gambale's exclusion principle for modes, using two major triads (on the 4th and 5th degree of the ionian scale) over a specific root note to instantly capture a distinct Major Modal sound. This technique is great for instantly creating a clear Major Modal sound (Ionian, Lydian, Mixolydian) in your comping and chord voicings, great for styles of playing. I focus specifically on the three major modes: Ionian (Major), Lydian, and Mixolydian. For C Ionian, the triads are F Major and G Major over a C root. His main instruments and the foundation of his musical thinking are the electric and western acoustic guitar, but he also enjoys singing and playing the electric bass guitar. Additionally, he produces, records, and mixes music in his studio.

Spending a lifetime around his guitar, Benjamin has developed a virtuosic playing style and completed a full-time jazz guitar study at the Institute for the Arts (Artez) in the Netherlands. Despite his jazz background, he has a strong passion for rock music. His creative songwriting and contributions span many different styles of music, perfectly fitting that rocking attitude. Besides being a live and studio musician, he is utterly passionate about guitar teaching.
