Naiad is developing a low-cost, rapid prototyping 3D bioprinter for producing organotypic microtissues.

With the Naiad bioprinter, the biopolymer hydrogel is printed directly into liquid and the liquid phase can be adapted to modify the structure being fabricated. The advantage of the fluid exchange process is that it allows the hydrogel properties to be customised in real-time during the printing process.

This facilitates the creation of complex extracellular matrix mimics that are loaded with cellular cues, making it possible to more closely replicate various tissues. Therefore, Naiad’s proprietary fluid exchange system enables the end user to create complex tissue models that better resemble human tissues.

This technology has been developed by Professor Emmanuel Reynaud, UCD School of Biomolecular and Biomedical Science and Associate Professor Brian Rodriguez, UCD School of Physics.
