Let’s talk about VAGINISMUS! 🌸

✨What is it?
Vaginismus is a sexual health condition that causes the muscles surrounding the entrance to the vagina to involuntarily tighten, making penetration almost impossible and extremely painful.
Vaginismus can affect people differently. Some find that they cannot insert anything at all into their vagina whereas others may be able to use period products like tampons but experience terrible difficulty and pain with penetrative sex which can impact their relationships.

✨What does that mean?
We need everyone to understand that this is a very real and very distressing condition. People are often told “it’s all in your head” - but that mental disruption is causing a physical response!! According to doctors, Vaginismus is caused by a dysregulation in the limbic system (a group of structures in your brain that regulate motivation, memory, and emotion). But this does not make either the physical or emotional pain any less!

✨How do you know you have Vaginismus?
It’s not difficult to diagnose Vaginismus, it generally manifests as painful intercourse or fear and anxiety at the thought of penetration, but the treatment can be very complex and long, so the sooner you get started the quicker your chances are of healing.
If you are finding sex painful or anxiety inducing please don’t brush it off, go see a doctor. Sex should never make you miserable!!!
