Inspired by Domenico Angelo´s "School of Fencing" (1763) we tested out to use a Lantern with the Smallsword. We started with simulating an early evening, then followed by dusk and finally total darkness. The results were interesting.

The fencer with the lantern can see quite well even with an old lamp like this, but it is enough, especially when coming closer to walls etc. The opponent however is a bit blinded by the light, but most importantly, though he can see the light, he cannot see the fencer behind it, he is nearly invisible. This gives great opportunities to distract and trick the opponent, by manipulating him with the lantern.

So the lantern is a usefull tool during night to blind, distract, trick the opponent and even to parry his blade.

Don´t try this at home, due t the darkness you need to be carfull and controlled in your actions.
