Air layering is a great method to propagate woody plants like hibiscus, guava, pomegranate, rose, and even some ficus species. It encourages roots to grow on a stem while it’s still attached to the parent plant. (You can try this method in rainy season not now 😋) Here’s a step-by-step guide.

Materials Needed:
Sharp knife or blade
Moist sphagnum moss or cocopeat
Plastic sheet or cling wrap
Twine or zip ties
Rooting hormone (optional)

Steps for Air Layering:

Choose the Branch:
Select a healthy, pencil-thick stem that is about 1–2 years old.
Preferably semi-hardwood (not too soft or too hard).

Make a Cut:
About 30–45 cm from the tip, make a ring cut (1–2 inches wide) around the branch.
Remove the bark carefully, exposing the white cambium layer.
Scrape the green layer to prevent it from healing and reconnecting.

Apply Rooting Hormone (Optional):
Dust or apply a rooting hormone on the exposed area to speed up root development.

Wrap with Moss or Cocopeat:
Moisten sphagnum moss or cocopeat and place it around the cut section.
Make sure it’s damp but not dripping wet.

Wrap with Plastic:
Cover the moss with plastic sheet or cling wrap to hold moisture.
Tie both ends securely with twine or zip ties.
For extra protection, wrap aluminum foil around the plastic to block light.

Wait for Roots:
In 3–8 weeks (depending on the plant and weather), roots will develop.
Check occasionally for root formation.

Cut and Plant:
Once you see enough roots through the plastic, cut the branch just below the rooted area.
Plant it in a pot or directly in soil and keep in shade initially.
