This guitar belongs to my friend Donny Andrews.
The Musician Series was introduced in 1978. It was one of the first original designs Ibanez released (as opposed to Les Paul copies). There were 5 models, the MC100, MC200, MC300, MC400, and the MC500 was the top of the line. It's a neck-thru design with a 7-piece neck made of maple and black walnut. The body wings are maple with ash top & back caps. Don's guitar is finished in a beautiful Dark Stain.
Only about 400 MC500's were made during this first year of the run...confirmed numbers are 291 finished with Dark Stain (DS), 104 with a natural finish (NT)...and then an unknown but limited number of Antique Violin (AV) and black (BK) were also produced. These precise production numbers are confirmed by Ibanez insiders of the time. So Don's Ibanez is one of just 291 Dark Stain examples that were made in 1978!
The MC500 features the timeless brass appointments that were popular in the late '70s. Below the slotted Gibralter tailpiece is the fancy Ibanez cloud ornament. Underneath the Gibralter bridge is brass sustain block recessed into the guitar. It has an ebony neck with abalone dot inlays, and the nut is made of half bone/half brass.
The pickups are Ibanez 88's, but they're integrated into the plastic covers.
The serial number on the back of the headstock reads 784487.
The Musician series was produced from 1978 to 1982, and a few spec changes were made over the years. One change is the serial number layout...on later versions, the serial no. would start with a letter to indicate the month it was made, where A = January, B = February, C = March and so forth. This guitar does not have a letter in the serial number, it just starts with 78. It was the 4,487th instrument to come out of the FujiGen factory in 1978.
Other changes include the EQ system getting a master control and an L.E.D. light, and the input jack was moved from the front of the body to the side (where it should've been in the first place, in my opinion...I hate a front-mounted input jack!)
