Mayaca Indian Mound Adventure in Ocala National Forest

Exploring and hiking in Ocala National Forest I journey out to an ancient Native American Indian Mound. It was once part of a larger mound complex here along the St. Johns River and inhabited by the Mayaca tribe for over a thousand years. The mound possible dates back over a thousand years and was once even larger. It was part of a shell midden where natives hunted and gathered food. You can just sense the past roaming out here deep in the forest, just image all those that once were here the area would’ve looked much different very long ago. The Spanish and other explorers during the 1500’s encountered this tribe during their expeditions. These mounds would’ve been high vantage points for the natives. Villages and other mounds would’ve surrounded this place. Over the centuries the mounds were used for various purposes from one generation to the next. Burial, ceremonial, hunting and also for living purposes as structures would’ve been constructed on top of and around the mounds. It would’ve taken centuries to build this mound up with shells. It’s incredible to explore the place today now preserved within this national forest. As always I leave all areas undisturbed. Lots of trails surround the area so there is a lot to explore.
