VOLVO HACK for new 12V BATTERY - BMS reset ONLY for NEW main battery! (age reset without VIDA)

ONLY for brand new main 12V battery!
Battery icon blinks only in MY2014+ cars.

(different trick for LOW BATTERY warning:    • RESET "LOW BATTERY" in Volvo - discon...  )

NEVER do this hack after recharging old battery! If used on older battery, it will be overcharged.

This trick doesn't work in new platform SPA/CMA Volvo cars.

When to use this hack?
Only after installing new 12V main battery in Volvo Platform 3 with BMS, approximately 2010-17.

IMPORTANT: before removing old battery and istalling new 12V battery turn off the ignition, remove the key and wait at least 15 minutes. Replace 12V battery, then in VIDA reset the battery age counter (BMS - battery monitoring sensor).

Without VIDA just do this hack:
1. Turn ignition ON position II (press and hold START for over 5 seconds without touching any pedals, until ALL icons light up on tachometer), but don't start engine.
2. Turn ON front lights (not in Auto!)
3. Rear foglight - press 6x times
4. Hazard lights (red triangle) - press 3x times (stays ON - turn OFF later)

5. Turn ignition off and ON again - battery icon blinks 3x in some other cars
6. Turn off hazard lights

You can normally drive the vehicle after this trick

In older cars you get NO visual confirmation, but battery age counter is reset in all cars with BMS, very easy to check with free Car Scanner ELM OBD2 phone app.

This trick is required in Platform 3 (approx 2010-2017) Volvo cars with Battery Monitoring Sensor BMS (small box on negative battery terminal), when main 12V battery is replaced. Trick does not work in new SPA platform Volvo!

Small auxiliary start-stop battery has no BMS sensor, no need to reset BMS when replacing small battery.

In some cars it works if dipped lights were first turned on before Ignition ON. You might try that sequence, too.

How to check if trick was successful?
you can use free phone app Car Scanner ELM OBD2 app (Android/iOS)

 What you see next morning in Car Scanner (car locked for at least 6 hours):
- State of Charge (SoC) recalculated to correct value
- quiescent current back to real value: less than -25 mA is optimal
- "Battery operation time since BMS reset: 0 days"

LOW BATTERY
"Low battery" means the main battery is at 50-60% SOC. SOC is like fuel level in the fuel tank - shows momentary amount of energy in your battery, but it does not describe the battery health. State of Health (SOH) of 12V battery can be quickly determined at any service with special tester. Volvo keeps battery at 82-85% SoC.

ELM327 adapter shows battery voltage under load (1-5 amps). ELM327 always shows lower battery voltage than 'resting' battery voltage in battery charts (battery removed and left for 24 hours).

how to keep 12V battery at high SOC:
- don't sit in car with engine off (1-2 amps draw, 4-5 amps with radio ON)
- don't listen to music with engine off (audio draws 3 to 5 amps)
- lock the car when parked, open locks keep modules awake much longer
- any extra electronics (dashcam, Bluetooth dongle, LED bulbs) cause parasitic drain - check standby drain (quiescent current average) in Car Scanner app
- with webasto, drive as long as webasto was running

"Low Battery" trick
To clear LOW BATTERY warning you can disconnect BMS-plug for 20 seconds:    • RESET "LOW BATTERY" in Volvo - discon...  
Car recalculates the SOC overnight without resetting battery age counter to "0 days". You may get rid of "low battery" warning, but with battery below 50-60% SOC, LOW BATTERY will reappear.

Quiescent current (standby current) is constantly measured every minute by BMS. Average should be less than 25 mA (for last 10 hours of sleep mode). Good advice: lock the car in garage!

hack in new Ford cars (I didn't test in Volvo):
To reset the BMS turn on accessory mode (press start without pressing the brake), flash the brights 5 times quickly, then press the brake 3 times. The battery icon on the dash will blink and then turn back to solid.
