Richard Marx wrote the song in 1989, inspired by his wife Cynthia Rhodes: he had been separated from her for three months and saw writing the song as the only way to show her how much he missed her. He had written the song within ten minutes, but didn't want to publish it as he thought it was too personal. He also thought that the one ballad that was already on the album was enough. After the demo recording of the song was accidentally sent to friends of Marx, who were able to persuade him, the song made it onto the album after all.
