Stu Harrison of Merriam Pianos takes a Kawai CA78 Digital Piano through its paces as he plays two favourites: “Route 66” by Bobby Troup, and “Feels Like Home” by Randy Newman.

The CA78 is part of Kawai’s acclaimed Concert Artist series which is considered a ‘hybrid’ - meaning that it uses acoustic and digital components in its design. In this case, the acoustic component is the wooden key action, which have the same keystick length as a real acoustic upright piano.

Also a first for the industry is its embedded colour touch screen display, which allows you to operate the instrument as though it were a smartphone or small tablet. Intuitive, fun to use, and attractive - all while ridding the interface of ALL buttons.

The keyboard also uses stereo individual-note samples of the SK-EX concert grand to recreate its piano tone, something it does with high success. It also integrates several acoustic processing circuits from Onkyo, a hi-fi Japanese company that Kawai has been collaborating with on the CA series as well as the new Novus 10.

Although you can’t hear it in the review, the CA78 has a discrete headphone amplifier that’s also driven by Onkyo technology, allowing you to specify the type of headphone you are using, and how much spatial simulation you want on it…so cool.
