Groningen (Groningen: Grunn, Grunnen, [xrœ̝n̩]? Frisian: Grins, [ɡre:ⁿs]?) is the capital of the Dutch province of Groningen and the largest center in the municipality of the same name. The place becomes problematic in the province of Groningen and parts of Drenthe simply as the City.[2][3][4][5] In 2023, the city of Groningen had 206,010 inhabitants. It is the largest city in the Northern Netherlands. Groningen had a hard time during the Second World War. The Grote Markt in particular was severely damaged during the liberation in April 1945. In total, more than 300 buildings in the city were lost due to the war, including the complete north and east walls of the Grote Markt. The symbol of the city, the Martini Tower (called d'Olle Grieze by the Stadjers) and the native church are conspicuously spared, next to the Gold Office and the Town Hall. The Main Guard at the foot of the Martini Tower was damaged to such an extent that it was not too red. The Martinikerkhof is located tens of kilometers from the Grote Markt. The place is one of the most serene places in the city, with the provincial government building and the Prinsenhof as eye-catchers, but until the 1970s it was used as a parking lot. The most mysterious building in Groningen was also located here: the St. Walburg Church. The location of the church, demolished in 1627, is marked. Behind the Prinsenhof is the beautiful Prinsentuin with one of the most richly designed sundials in the country. The Vismarkt is located on the west side of the Grote Markt. The south side of this square in particular contains a number of beautiful buildings. The square is closed on the west side by the Korenbeurs, a reference to the wealth of the province in the nineteenth century, which was based on grain cultivation on the fertile sea clay.

Het is de grootste stad van noordelijk Nederland. Groningen heeft het zwaar te verduren gehad tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Met name de Grote Markt werd tijdens de bevrijding in april 1945 zwaar beschadigd. In totaal gingen er in de stad ruim 300 panden verloren door het oorlogsgeweld, waaronder de complete noord- en oostwand van de Grote Markt. Het symbool van de stad, de Martinitoren (door de Stadjers d'Olle Grieze genoemd) en de bijbehorende kerk bleven gespaard, evenals het Goudkantoor en het stadhuis. De Hoofdwacht aan de voet van de Martinitoren, raakte dusdanig beschadigd dat deze niet te redden was. Ten noordoosten van de Grote Markt ligt het Martinikerkhof. De plek geldt als een van de meest serene plekken van de stad met als blikvangers het provinciehuis en het Prinsenhof, maar tot in de jaren zeventig van de vorige eeuw was het in gebruik als parkeerterrein. Hier stond ook het meest mysterieuze gebouw van Groningen: de Sint-Walburgkerk. De locatie van de in 1627 gesloopte kerk is gemarkeerd. Achter het Prinsenhof ligt de fraaie Prinsentuin met hierin een van de rijkst vormgegeven zonnewijzers van het land. Aan de westkant van de Grote Markt ligt de Vismarkt. Met name de zuidkant van dit plein bevat een aantal fraaie panden. Het plein wordt aan de westkant afgesloten door de Korenbeurs, een verwijzing naar de rijkdom van de provincie in de negentiende eeuw die gebaseerd was op de graanteelt op de vruchtbare zeeklei.

Die Hauptwache am Fuße des Martiniturms war so stark beschädigt, dass sie nicht zu rot war. Der Martinikerkhof liegt Dutzende Kilometer vom Grote Markt entfernt. Der Ort ist einer der ruhigsten Orte der Stadt, mit dem Landesregierungsgebäude und dem Prinsenhof
