You’re at home watching your favorite show, and then all of the sudden…
You see that there is a Tornado Warning issued in your area. At first you panic… but then you remember that you have a safety plan that your family created to follow.
Hi, I’m Mr. Weather, in this lesson you’ll learn tips to be weather-ready for severe weather.
There are many types of weather hazards, but let’s focus on thunderstorms, tornadoes, hurricanes, and winter weather.
When severe weather is on its way, and you receive a Wireless Emergency Alert to your phone, its vital to know the difference between a Watch and a Warning.
A watch is issued when conditions are favorable for a particular severe weather hazard within the next several hours. A warning is issued when a particular severe weather hazard is likely to occur or happening already. When a warning is issued, you should take immediate action to protect life and property.
Think back to my earlier example, what should you do if a severe thunderstorm or tornado is expected?
First, get inside — put as many walls between you and the outside as possible. Stay away from doors and windows. Second, get down — get to the lowest floor possible, basements are best during tornadoes with very high wind speeds. Third, cover up — protect yourself from any debris that might be flying around. Last, remain calm — don’t panic! If you follow these steps you have a better chance to stay safe!
For other types of severe weather feel free to visit www.weather.gov/safety.
Follow these steps to be weather-ready!
Check your forecast routinely from a RELIABLE source like the National Weather Service or your local meteorologist. Be aware of accounts that are ran by “Weather enthusiasts” instead of certified meteorologists.
Sign up for notifications to receive timely alerts.
Create a communications plan that indicates emergency meeting places and other related information. Get ideas of what your plan should include by going to this website. (www.ready.gov/make-a-plan).
Practice your plan - practice makes perfect!
Prepare your home.
And finally, help your neighbors. Encourage others to prepare for severe weather. You might want to take a CPR course to help others in an emergency.
If you follow these guidelines you are on your way to be weather-ready and stay protected when natural disasters or severe weather occur.
