The Vision of a Complete Digitally Connected Shipyard

Many industries face the need to increase profitability by reducing time and cost while ensuring the continued quality of the product. New advances in Scanning and 3D documentation allow companies to easily realize the goal of a complete digital workflow from scanning through planning even to manufacturing.

In this scenario, a section of pipe will be replaced during the overhaul of a ship.

The process begins with a detailed laser scan of the compartment containing the equipment in question. Laser scanning offers many advantages for documenting the actual state of the shipboard compartment. The primary advantage of reality capture is that all elements of the existing space are recorded, supporting the wide array of shipbuilding design disciplines who require measurements and spatial information from the compartment.

The point cloud scan is then used as the basis of the 3D model design. The critical cluster of points are transferred into the 3D modeling application where pre-defined shipbuilding asset models are placed in context of the existing environment.

Once the model is complete, digital drawings are easily created documenting the arrangement and dimensions necessary to fabricate replacement components.

The new 3D components are then added to the master space model containing all the digital components created for the shipboard compartment by the various shipbuilding design disciplines.

The master space model allows planners and fabricators to investigate the digital plan by means of real time flythrough and walkthrough capabilities. Including the initial Point Cloud in the master space model, allows planners to develop and plan the project in context of the actual state of the shipboard compartment.

The master space model can also display the installation process in context of time, linking all necessary tasks with the project timeline. Installers and Manufacturers can display the master space model at any point along the proposed installation timeline. This ability often reveals overlapping processes happening in the same limited area or a critically important piece of equipment necessary to accomplish later tasks.

When the project planning is finished, the complete digital design can be combined to form a single Digital Work Package. This Digital Work Package can be published to the waterfront for use by all manufacturing employees.

Elements of the Digital Work Package are easily displayed on mobile devices, allowing the fabrication teams to take full advantage of all digital design data while on the job site.

Fabrication instructions can also be carried into manufacturing shops via mobile platforms. Standard processes, Bills of Material, and 3D models allow the manufacturing workforce to stay connected to the complete digital engineering plan.

From Scanning, through Planning, and even into Manufacturing, the vision of a digitally connected workforce becomes a very viable process and a probable future for many industries including shipbuilding.
