Newborn brain injury caused by oxygen deprivation around birth can have devastating, lifelong consequences and requires intervention within hours of diagnosis. Physicians and nurses at the Johns Hopkins Children's Center NICU use therapeutic hypothermia, or 'cooling therapy,' to treat babies born with this condition. The cooling treatment works by reducing brain inflammation and halting neuronal cell death in the newborn brain.
