Beer manufacturer Lion Australia is ending 160 years of operation in South Australia by closing its Adelaide brewery.

The company is citing a struggling Australian beer market as the reason for the closure with demand falling by 20 per cent in the last decade as more people choose wine and spirits.

Lion Australia Managing Director James Brindley said the West End manufacturing brewery "was operating at 50 per cent of capacity”.

“The cost base for manufacturing and selling beer and the relevant taxes continue to increase," he said.

Over 90 production jobs will be lost which amounts to approximately one third of Lion Australia’s workforce.
