This is the trap we came up with after trying to catch Little Bit, the Chiweenie? my new friends and I rescued after trying conventional traps and methods for 7 weeks! We got her to move into this igloo doghouse as winter set in. The area she was living in was much too large and open to trap, confine or get her in. She acted very feral , and was not having it with us trying to befriend her. She was not food motivated in the least either. She did, however, begin to take toys we threw to her, and about two weeks prior to her capture, came within 6 feet of me, as long as I stayed in my car, to accept a toy. We used game cameras to monitor her behavior when she was in the doghouse, thinking that could help develop a trap that centered around the ONLY fact about her we had......she slept and ate in the doghouse. The original trap frame you see had a large door suspended above, made of the same metal fencing you see, and the idea was to tie a rope to the door as it was suspended above, and release it when you knew she was in the trap, and it would swing down quite hard and heavy, and latch shut. This proved to be too dangerous, so the door was removed and the remaining frame gave us something to zip tie the bottom of the netting to, and then we created a "drawstring bag" by weaving rope along the top and two sides of the net. The frame then allowed a "pulley" system for the rope so that the net would go UP. TThe net was laid as flat as it would go on the ground , covered in straw to distract, and then the rope was laid out as far back as it would go behind the doghouse. Someone snuck up on the rope, yanked hard and fast, trapping her inside. A second person came up after and closed off the dog house, and then myself came in with crate for the dog. It's very rudimentary, but it worked only the second time we attempted it, and it was the safest way we could think of to trap her. We had no live camera to know if she was inside prior to the attempt, but we figured after 7 weeks we had nothing to lose. Comments below for any questions or comments!
