James Beard's American Cookery cookbook has some pretty strange sounding cakes in it (at least to me!). I opened the book and the first page I look at: Tomato Soup Cake.....ok. The next page was Mayonnaise Cake.....
I must make them both. Game on.

Ingredients:

Mayonnaise Cake
1 cup chopped raisins or dates
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 cup boiling water
3 cup mayonnaise (not salad dressing)
1 cup sugar, white or firmly packed brown
2 cups sifted all-purpose four
½ teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon cocoa
1 cup broken nut meats
1 teaspoon vanilla

Mystery or Tomato Soup
Cake
¼ cup butter (½ stick)
1 cup sugar
2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
¼ teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon nutmeg
1 can (10¾ ounces) condensed tomato soup
1 teaspoon grated lemon rind
1 cup raisins
1 cup chopped toasted walnuts, pecans, filberts, or almonds
