What is Axillary Breast Tissue?
Axillary breast tissue refers to breast tissue that develops in an abnormal location — usually the armpit — during fetal development. This tissue becomes separated from the normal breast and does not include a nipple or areola, nor does it produce milk.

What Are the Causes?
Some common causes of axillary breast tissue or similar lumps include:

Abnormal tissue growth due to genetic factors

Lymphadenopathy

Parotitis

Supernumerary breast tissue (accessory breast)

Lipoma

How Is It Diagnosed?
A doctor can usually begin by physically examining the lump or swelling in the armpit. To further investigate its nature, your doctor may recommend the following tests:

Ultrasonography (Ultrasound)
This helps determine the nature of the swelling, its contents, and whether it has any vascular connection.

Mammography
This is done to rule out any underlying breast pathology or related conditions.

MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging)
In rare cases, if the doctor suspects conditions like tubercular lymphadenopathy or malignancy, an MRI may be advised for a more detailed assessment.

Classification and Grading (Kajjaba Classification)
According to Kajjaba Classification, axillary breast tissue is categorized based on the presence of glandular tissue, areola, and nipple:

Grade 1: Glandular tissue, areola, and nipple present

Grade 2: Glandular tissue and nipple present, but no areola

Grade 3: Glandular tissue and areola present, but no nipple

Grade 4: Only glandular tissue present

Grade 5: Only nipple and areola present (no glandular tissue)

Grade 6: Only nipple present

Grade 7: Only areola present

Grade 8: Only a patch of hair is present

Treatment Options
Leaving axillary breast tissue untreated is not advisable, as it may lead to complications or other underlying pathologies over time.

Exillaplasty is a modern, minimally invasive surgical method used to treat this condition. It combines excision (surgical removal of the tissue) and liposuction to provide a more contoured appearance of the underarm area.

Surgeons carefully select the incision site to ensure minimal scarring and an aesthetically pleasing outcome.
