Offline (Standby) UPS System
An offline UPS, also known as a standby UPS, is the most basic and economical type of uninterruptible power supply. It provides backup power during short power interruptions or voltage drops.
Working Principle
Under normal operation, the connected load (such as a computer or network device) is powered directly from the main AC supply. The UPS continuously monitors the voltage level.
When a power failure or severe voltage fluctuation occurs, the UPS automatically switches to battery power through an inverter. This switchover typically takes 2–10 milliseconds, which is sufficient for most standard electronic equipment.
Main Components
Charger: A controlled rectifier that converts AC power into regulated DC power to charge the battery when the main supply is available.
Battery: Stores energy for use during power outages.
Inverter: Converts DC battery power to AC for the load.
Transfer Switch: Instantly changes the supply from mains to inverter during an outage.
Advantages
Low cost and simple design.
High efficiency during normal operation (since it bypasses the inverter).
Compact and suitable for home or office use.
Limitations
Short transfer time may not be acceptable for very sensitive equipment.
Limited protection against voltage fluctuations and power quality issues.
Supports low power ratings only.
Applications
Personal computers and small office devices.
Point-of-sale (POS) systems.
Modems, routers, and low-load communication equipment.
