Visiting Narcotics Anonymous World Service Office

Dave is in Los Angeles and takes the opportunity to visit the office that serves a remarkable self-help organisation called Narcotics Anonymous (NA). NA was founded in Los Angeles back in 1953, by a handful of people who identified themselves as addicts and were seeking recovery from drug addiction. That handful of addicts helping each other to stay drug-free blossomed into a worldwide movement, that continues to expand at an exponential rate. There are now 67,000 registered NA meetings around the world, in 139 different countries. Its literature is translated into over forty-five different languages.

NA is structurally an unusual organisation in that it takes no outside funding, and supports its efforts through donations from its members and by the sales of its literature. It is also highly unusual in that it has maintained a way of working collaboratively without a top-down hierarchy. It has proved to be extremely resilient in transcending the potential barriers of class, race, culture, and gender.

Dave has heard that the NA ‘fellowship’, as it calls itself, have just published a new book that looks at the underlying principles of how its members work with each other, and how they relate to the world around them - and he’s not leaving without a copy.
