In a world where technology companies say that the products they push on us are designed to make our lives easier, Glacial Erratic explores a comedic look at what actually happens when we try to use these devices daily on practical level. Looking to watch Netflix tonight? Does your iPad support the latest version of Netflix? If not, you may need to upgrade to ios 10. But do you have enough storage for ios 10? If not, you can manage your storage in Settings. Sound familiar? Sound like a fun night of snuggling with your honey to be entertained? And while we are on that topic, why exactly do we need to operate our dishwashers from our smartphones? Glacial Erratic's two songs from TEDx Collingwood 2018 explore the following simple idea: Due to the reason that most technology companies are driven by profit rather than a desire to make the world a better place, many of the products that we as humans end up using (thanks to the expert marketing and persuasion employed by the tech giants) actually make our lives no easier than the products they replaced. And in some cases, these products make our lives more complicated. Is your dishwasher better than the one your parents used? Is your TV experience better with a tablet than a VCR? Really? Are you really more happy with an iPhone camera than just a regular camera?
And what happened to all those now-obsolete products? Glacial's old CD player is in the dump (even though it worked fine when he threw it out).
Dave Loopstra (Glacial Erratic) is an entrepreneur, musician, writer and thinker who lives in Thornbury with his wife and two kids. He's still trying to figure out how to Skype his grandma. Glacial Erratic (aka Dave Loopstra), is a writer, businessman, outdoor sports enthusiast and banjo- and guitar-player who finds that he spends a lot of time on his riding lawn mower now that he is a husband and father with a house and a yard.

Glacial’s comedic songs interpret life as a domesticated male, and cover such topics as having to dial 1-800-Samsung, trying to figure out updating the iPad’s operating system to iOS 10, getting the riding lawn mower stuck in the ditch, and accidentally eating a full cannabis gummy bear when the instructions were to only consume an 1/8th — and others.

Glacial lives in Thornbury with his wife, two kids and large yard of long grass. He can often be found at local open mic nights. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
