In Pakistan, breastfeeding is a natural and essential practice for nurturing infants. When a child consumes their mother’s milk, they benefit not only from vital nutrients but also from enhanced immunity against common diseases. On August 1, 2023, international organizations working towards global health and child well-being, including the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF, launched World Breastfeeding Week. During this week, workplaces and offices worldwide are encouraged to create an environment where working mothers can comfortably breastfeed their children without any hindrance. Over the past decade, there has been significant progress in increasing the rate of breastfeeding among young children in many countries. However, ensuring convenience for mothers to breastfeed their own children at their workplaces remains crucial. According to WHO and UNICEF, the percentage of infants who receive their mother’s milk has improved, reaching up to 48% in some countries. Notably, countries like Ivory Coast, the Marshall Islands, the Philippines, Somalia, and Vietnam have seen substantial increases in breastfeeding rates. By promoting safe breastfeeding practices and providing support to mothers, we can further enhance child survival and development. Remember, breastfeeding benefits not only the child but also the mother and society as a whole. Let’s work together to achieve the goal of having 70% of children worldwide breastfed by 2030, ensuring a supportive environment for women and families, especially in workplaces. Creating breastfeeding-friendly policies, such as maternity leave with pay, dedicated spaces for breastfeeding, and awareness campaigns, can lead to positive outcomes for both working women and their children.
