We love our DeWalt® DW735 13” (330mm) wood planer. It’s a great machine with good features, excellent serviceability, and comfortable controls.

The machine is outfitted with intuitive and useful controls. To see our full walkthrough of all the features of the machine, visit:

In this episode, we examined the two-speed feed rate switch more closely. The lower setting creates 96 cuts per inch (25mm), and the higher setting creates 179 cuts per inch (25mm). These settings are accomplished via speed changes in the rollers, not in the cutter head rotation rate.

The feed rates can only be changed while the machine is running, and this is clearly labeled under the selection switch. The position number and cuts per inch are also highly visible.

The lower rate is the typical speed for most wood planers. Depending on the condition of the knives, grain direction, and the amount of figure in the wood being planed, a very good surface can be produced using the lower amount of cuts per inch.

Balance must be maintained between productivity and finish. The planer needs to do its job well, but if what is produced creates more work, then time savings and convenience are lost. The planer strikes a good balance, and even a better one, when a helical head, such as the Byrd Shelix® 40-cutter planer head, is installed.

When the machine was run at 179 cuts per inch, the surface was very smooth for both hard and softwoods. Only a touch of sanding would be needed to prepare it for finishing.

The bottom line? The feed rate selection feature is useful and allows you to put a finer finish on stock that is being dimensioned to nearly finished size. The linkages that make the changes in the speed transmission for the rollers are simple and well made. For the price point of the planer, having features like this are a good value.
