Welcome to Bowlers Paradise!

As Columbia reworks its lineup to now feature all Hk22 covers, they round out the bottom of their performance categories with the messenger powercor pearl. This low end pearl features the same cover as Kaboom, Hk22 reflex pearl, and is powered inside by the mid rg and mid differential Messenger Powercor.

For the layout, I went with a 4x5.25x3.75 2LS layout. This one is honestly an Experiment. There's been lots of releases with similar specs to this one, so this is meant to see a different look with a piece I have a decent understanding of what its supposed to do. This is probably not a strategy I would use with a big asym, but for a lower tier piece of equipment like this one, sometimes its fun to see what a new layout gives you.

AND ON THE LANES…the messenger pearl was great. This is a simple piece with a simple path to the pocket. It provides easy length to get it to the spot downlane that it needed to get too, and a very usable motion off that spot. The messenger Didn't force me into any specific area at the arrows, but definitely needed to get outside and into some friction to do the right thing.

But my favorite part about throwing this one was its Repeatability on the shots that get to the 4 board. If I got it to that spot, there was a high likelihood that it was going to strike, and that the shape was going to even look great doing it. Sometimes with lower end pieces like this, they'll hesitate to get up to the pocket even on the good shots, but not with the messenger pearl.

However, on the misses towards the inside part of the lane, it was too clean and the shape can only be described as flippy. Sure, there may be a time that that is the right way to get through the pins, but its pretty rare and typically is a recipe for splits. The key here is know when the time is right to use this piece, and having a good set of complementary pieces to go with it.

So if I were to add the messenger powercor pearl to my arsenal, I'd likely pair it with a Rattler NU and the Track Cypher. The NU will be fun and reliable in the part of the lane just outside of where the messenger would be best, and then the Cypher be the reliable, strong but even reacting solid piece. The Messenger fits in-between these two so it gives you the flexibility to tweak the cover to best match your playing style.

Jumping to our crossbrand comparisons, I first took a look at the Supra GT from Motiv and here I see a piece that is about as clean through the first 40' of the lane as the messenger, but with its increased differential, makes a more pronounced move towards the pocket. Players with a lower rev rate will likely match up more effectively with one to fill out the bottom of their arsenal.

The I took a look at the Lightning Blackout from storm and here I see a shape that is pretty much the same. Now, If you want to try and define the difference, I'm all ears, but the only thing I can think of is that the Lightning might be able to be used a bit earlier in the heart of the lane as ReX Pearl is a stronger cover, but at its box reactagloss finish, this one and the messenger pearl see the fit the same part of an arsenal.

But with that, here’s my recommendations on types of bowlers that I think would match up well with this piece. The first is 2-Handers. High speed and high revs always produce a lot of strikes, but those players who can stay around the friction with this messenger are going to yield great results. It won't force them to move way in, and it also won't struggle to get through early friction, which is about all you can ask for out of a low end piece.

The second recommendation is for lefties. Because this piece looks so good when I can keep it up the lane, I see it being a great option to beat that urethane stretch without needing huge angles through the fronts. The messenger pearl will clear the fronts even when they're blown up and will be able to boom of the mid lane friction brought on my that inevitable purple hammer traffic.

The all new Messenger Powercor Pearl might not be the flashiest release of the year, but in the right hands, could be what you need to deliver your next perfect game.
