A few tips for driving around Tuscany. This is based on our experience in the area around Montepulciano & Pienza, so it might be different in other parts of Italy.

As the one driving for us, I can tell you there are some differences that I wish I had known before we left the Rome airport. Mostly about the roads themselves. Florida is flat and wide…Tuscany, not so much. Much of my driving style can be summed up as “sweating & swearing”. 😆 Do a little mental prep so you can avoid that.

✨ Yes, renting a car is the easiest way to get around the area. But unless you live in a very mountainous area, mentally prepare for the driving. Roads are narrow & winding. There will be turns that you can’t see around ~ embrace using your horn when you can’t see. 😁 Also distances might not seem far, but plan on extra time driving because of the terrain.
✨ Even if you rent a car, let yourself really enjoy a day of winery tours and hire a driver. It was so much more enjoyable for everyone to not have to worry about the driving after a full day of wine tasting.
✨ When traveling into small town, be aware of “ZTL’s” (Zona Traffico Limitato). You’ll see cars drive in, but they have permits for the area. If you think because you’re in a rental you won’t get a ticket…they will find you. We might know from experience 😁
✨ There are quite a few speed cameras in towns, but your GPS might warn you in advance. But the huge orange box on the side of the road is an indicator.
✨ Many town have very limited parking, look on city websites before visiting to get an idea of all the options.
✨ If you plan on driving through Italy or Europe for a while, look into an International Driving Permit. We go one for only $20 through AAA. You might not need it, but when you’re pulled over in Italy, is that when you want to find out you should have gotten it?? 😁
