I went to visit their highly automated production nursery recently and got talking with Mike about the challenges of using peat free composts. They have gone through a difficult learning process (actually they had to 're-learn' after 80 years of using traditional composts) of how to grow healthy happy plants in peat free composts on a huge commercial scale .. where the 'stakes are high' if plants don't grow properly it will (and has)cost them thousands of pounds in lost plants and lost sales and re-investment into new growing practices in order that their family business is more sustainable (in both an environmental sense but also in a commercial viability sense because if the UK government do decide eventually to ban t he use of peat nurseries have the choice to either change their production methods .. or close .. and several have already closed!)
The great new is Mike and his team are emerging at the end of the painful journey and are now almost completely peat free and confident that they can continue the family business ... growing in Peat Free Composts ... it can be done!
