Madurai Junction railway station is a railway station in South India and the primary railway station serving the city of Madurai, Tamil Nadu.[2] The station is the headquarters of the Madurai railway division of the Southern Railways and is an A1 graded train station by the Indian Railways for being one of the top 100 booking stations in the country. The first railway line in this region was open in 1857 connecting Madurai to Trichirappalli {Trichy} via Dindigul and onward. In the following year, the railway line from Madurai to the port city of Thoothukudi was completed. In the same year, another line branching off from Vanchi Maniyachchi to Tirunelveli was opened.
