You know what’s worse than bipolar stigma? Bipolar and self-stigma, where we tear ourselves down.

Self-stigma is the biased, negative judgment that we impose on ourselves. In this video, I share my experience living with bipolar and dealing with self-stigma.

What we hear in the media and from other people about bipolar disorder is absorbed by us and becomes our negative beliefs about ourselves. If I could describe it, it’s like looking into a mirror with these negative things written around the mirror; like:

• Worthless
• Violent
• Incapable
• Unlovable

Those words begin to distort our self-perception.

Self-stigma was a significant problem in my life with bipolar disorder. When I was in the mental hospital and diagnosed with bipolar 2, I was so disconnected from who I believed myself to be because of what society had ingrained in my mind about mental illness.

There is a difference between the symptoms of bipolar, the stigma and who we are as an individual. It took years of learning about my condition, stigma and self-stigma, and meeting other people with bipolar disorder and other mental illnesses, for me to accept myself and let go of those negative beliefs.

What society believes about people with bipolar disorder, doesn’t have to be what we believe about ourselves. It’s important you speak positively to yourself every day from the moment you wake up.
