This video explains the relationship between ICAO, EASA, and 193 aviation authorities, who are responsible for issuing pilot licenses. Furthermore, it explains the difference between various licenses and ratings. And the limitations.
To qualify for a job as an airline pilot, you will need the following: Commercial Pilot License (CPL) with multi-engine land class rating, instrument rating, and passed the ATPL theory exam (“frozen ATPL”). In some countries, you also need a Multi-Crew Cooperation (MCC) course. An alternate this long list is a Multi-crew Pilot License (MPL). And if you plan to work in a foreign country, you will have to convert your license.
To get a type rating on an airliner, you need, according to EASA, multi-engine class rating, instrument rating, and MCC course. You must also have passed the ATPL written test. When you have a CPL or MPL, you will be limited to fly as a first officer (co-pilot). To be captain on an airliner, you need an ATPL. The airline company will give you this upgrade when they consider you qualified and you are the next on the seniority list.
