A rarely performed work, Schoenberg's Cello Concerto in D Major was freely adapted from Georg Matthias Monn's 18th century concerto for clavicembalo. Although Schoenberg wrote the concerto for Pablo Casals, by whom he was inspired to incorporate Spanish dances and rhythms into the last movement, Casals never performed the work outside the privacy of his own home; instead giving the premiere performance to Emmanuel Feuermann. In the same vein as Schoenberg's other orchestral arrangements, including his Concerto for String Quartet and Orchestra freely adapted from a Handel Concerto Grosso, as well as his famous orchestration of Brahms's G minor Piano Quartet, Schoenberg incorporates the original themes and structure with extended techniques, striking harmonies, and a vividly unique orchestration, manifesting his own humorous take on neoclassicism.
