On April 4, 1983, NASA successfully launched STS-6, the very first mission of the Space Shuttle Challenger. Following liftoff from Kennedy Space Center, the twin solid rocket boosters (SRBs) separated and parachuted into the Atlantic Ocean for recovery.

This footage shows one of the SRBs floating in the ocean after separation, awaiting retrieval by NASA’s recovery ships. The boosters were refurbished and reused in later missions, a key part of the shuttle program’s cost-saving and reusability goals.
