Hi Spacecats, I'm Dr Maggie Lieu and welcome to my channel, where you can find all things space, astronomy and physics! Do you think the universe has a memory? In this video, I talk about the prediction from Einstein's theory of General Relativity known as gravitational wave memory.

We'll look at how gravitational waves leave a permanent scar on the fabric of spacetime, not just as a temporary ripple, but as a lasting displacement (displacement memory) or even a twist (spin memory). We'll dive into the deep physics that connects this memory to black holes' soft hair and the elegant BMS symmetries, also known as the Infrared Triangle, and discover why current detectors like LIGO struggle to find this "cosmic scar" and how a future mission like LISA is perfectly designed to detect it.
