What do you get from your mom? Maybe you're going to say curly hair, or the shape of your feet. But what about habits and passions? For many of us, our mother's lap was the place we learned to love books. At first, we just listened, and looked. Then our eyes followed along, and we excitedly smacked the pages with our hands. And one day, we understood. And one day, we began to read.

Every night at bed time, we made a great escape
by rocketship or rickshaw, however it took shape.
Deep into the ocean, or to Saturn, or beyond,
reading chapter after chapter, (well, at least until I yawned).
As I watched your hands turn pages, I'd meet dragons, martians, bears
from the comfort of your lap - the finest choice of all the chairs.
You were patient, you were loving, you were funny, you were kind.
When I stumbled through the sentences, you never seemed to mind.
From you I get my math skills, double-jointed thumbs, good looks;
but most of all, I take from you a lifelong love of books.
Of all the gifts you gave me - far far more than I could list -
The one I carry with me most, and cherish most is this:
You put a love for books in me, planted as a tiny seed.
You gave me all the stories, and you taught me how to read.
Thank you for the knowledge that there's so much more to see.
Thank you for this lifelong love. Thank you for reading to me.
