Hanh's Macaw Or African Grey Parrot? 🦜 Which I Would Pick

Two parrots from two different continets!

Both wonderful parrots -

Now, if cost is an issue, keep in mind that the Hahn's Macaw is likely to be half the price of the African Grey parrot.

Otherwise, they do have very different personalities, as far as what I have experienced. Hahn's Macaws are cute and cuddly! Emerald is affectionate and ALWAYS wants to be with you. Always. Send her off flying or put her on a perch and she makes her way back onto your shoulder.

She's smart, sweet and talks in a 'parrot' voice. Does tricks too!

Our African Greys were adopted as adults. That means they aren't as bonded to us. Had we raised them, I'm sure they would be closer to being an affectionate parrot, but African Greys are not known for being cuddly. Instead, the word I'd use to describe them is aloof.

African Grey parrots are keen; they see everything and know to call, "Come here!" when the dog's name is called. They do like pets, although sometimes they pull the 'bait and switch.' turning head skritches into finger bites! But their ability to mimic sounds is legendary and their personalities are fun. African Grey parrots aren't terribly loud parrots, which is great, but when the rest of my flock settles at night, they sometimes are most vocal. A thief breaking into the house in the dark would swear that there was a person - or ghost - talking to them in the room!

If I wanted a more cuddly and bonded parrot, I would feel that a Hahn's Macaw's red shoulders would be more likely to provide this kind of connection. If I wanted a great mimic and one of the smartest and most mysterious parrots that aren't too loud but may not want to be on my shoulder all day, I'd go with the striking red African Grey tail.
