Another winter storm pummeled Maine Tuesday night into Wednesday, with snow, rain and high winds causing power outages, some school closures, and warnings of flash flooding along southern coastal areas.

Gov. Janet Mills ordered a delayed opening on Wednesday for all state offices until noontime. The storm warnings also prompted some school closures in the state. District officials in Bangor and York announced no school at all Wednesday, while other districts, such as Lewiston, issued a two-hour delay to accommodate re-routing of buses around flooded areas.

Winds varied in speed, with higher gusts reported overnight, leading to widespread power outages. By 10 a.m., Central Maine Power had reported more than 42,000 of its customers were without power, with the largest amount in Lincoln County, with nearly 9,100. At noontime, CMP's outages had dropped to more than 24,600, with the most in Waldo County at more than 4,900. Versant reported nearly 22,000 as of noontime, with the most in Deer Isle, with nearly 2,000.

Versant Power reported more than 18,000 outages, with the most in Brewer at more than 3,600 in the dark.

The winds also caused a headache at Portland International Jetport, where a Southwest Airlines jet was pushed across the runway into a jetbridge – an enclosed, moveable gangplank that connects the airport’s gate to the plane – at around 4:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Jetport officials said the aircraft was parked and empty at the time, and no one was hurt.

The rains caused the National Weather Service to issue flash flood warnings until noontime Wednesday for coastal portions of Cumberland County and southern York County. Footage posted to social media appears to show flooding in several areas of Portland and South Portland, including paved areas of the Coast Guard station in South Portland under as much as two feet of water.

Major rivers, however, show no signs of the damaging flooding that took place in December 2023.

The Androscoggin and Kennebec Rivers, according to the National Weather Service, were several feet below flood stage as of 10 a.m. Wednesday. Meteorologists said last month’s flooding was caused in part by snow melting and rain in the mountains, but Tuesday night’s storm appeared to produce mostly snow in northern parts of the state.
