University of Newcastle students featured on the international stage with a winning entry to the annual iGEM international synthetic biology competition in 2013. This not-for-profit short documentary was shot while the competition was underway with teams around the world competing to win gold.

Teams used standard biobricks - pieces of functional DNA - to create unique living organisms, new technologies that might help change the face of biology. Newcastle students used these synthetic biology building blocks to build L-forms (strains of bacteria without cell walls) to see if they could improve the way that plants absorb nutrients. If successful their work could have implications for the way that crops are grown in future.

Synthetic biology is a branch of biotechnology and is still a new field. Scientists are using it to build new organisms, or to adapt existing biology, to help revolutionise everything from agriculture to computing.

This film is useful for anyone interested in biotechnology or synthetic biology jobs and courses. It also shows how dedicated young people can work in teams to compete for global recognition in a field that is still only in its infancy, and that has incredible implications for the world around us.
