Should You Take A Maternity / Paternity Leave During A PhD? Professor - Having A Baby In Grad School

Having a baby is very exciting, but it can be quite stressful during a PhD. Taking a maternity / paternity leave during your PhD is really about life choices and what you are going to prioritize. Absolutely, if you have the option to take a maternity / paternity leave during your PhD, you should think about taking the opportunity.

What you do during the maternity / paternity leave is up to you. Many people in academia will choose to work through the maternity / paternity leave to get an advantage on getting tenure. But, you should ask yourself, what you should be prioritizing during that time?

There are things you want to ask yourself during a maternity / paternity leave.

How much income do you have and do you have income coming in during your maternity / paternity leave?

Are you physically able to work?

What obligations do you truly have to do during your PhD journey?

Above and beyond those questions, the choice to actually take a maternity or paternity leave is very much up to you. You have to make a firm choice, and decide what your life is going to be. Having a baby is the time where you actually have to make your own choices in life.
