cuphead is the titular protagonist of cuphead. cuphead is mugman's irresponsible older twin brother and, like the rest of his family, lives on inkwell isle. he is usually played by the first player and, as a result, was the default character for player one before the update in april 2019, after which the first player can choose whether to play as him or mugman. as his name suggests, cuphead's head is a wide cup with milk inside, topped with a red and white striped straw. his face consists of eyes that are very close together with black pie-cut pupils, and a small red nose. he always has a determined expression in the face of danger.

mugman is the deuteragonist of cuphead. he is cuphead's sensible younger twin brother and, like the rest of his family, lives on inkwell isle. he is controlled by the second player and can join or leave the game at any time. mugman is very similar in overall appearance to his twin older brother cuphead, with his head reminiscing a mug and his body being almost identical to his sibling: wearing a black, long-sleeve shirt, yellow gloves, a pair of shorts and brown shoes, although artworks sometimes show him with white gloves.

butt-head is one of the main protagonists of beavis and butt-head. he is beavis' best friend and close companion. of both title characters, butt-head appears to be the leader of the two. he is calmer, older, more laid-back, and marginally more intelligent than beavis, but is oblivious to subtleties, semi-literate, and still significantly less intelligent than the other characters in the show. he seems to almost never lose his cool no matter how dire situations get, including when not being able to "score" while beavis gets extremely pissed about it. he almost always says "uhh" to indicate his low intelligence and lack of understanding. he even considers himself better than everyone else to the point of being extremely condescending to others, except for todd whom he and beavis worship. regardless, as the 'leader', he is usually 100% confident in everything he says and does – no matter how ridiculous or frivolous it is. butt-head seems to be the lazier of the duo. according to mike judge, despite getting many other people into trouble, the duo are innocent, as they don't want to cause any serious trouble. he never seems to react to things unless they catch his attention, in which case he describes them as 'cool'. beavis, on the other hand, always has some kind of reaction, although his actions predictably end with bad results.

beavis is one of the main protagonists of beavis and butt-head. he is butt-head's best friend and close companion. originally starting out as a "sidekick and a follower", beavis eventually turned into a "loose cannon" as the show went on. he is oblivious to what should be the obvious and is "a zero" in terms of intellect. contrasting against butt-head's more dominant and brash personality, beavis is more submissive and often tolerates his physical and verbal confrontations, usually without retaliating. however, even beavis has his limits. there have been occasions in which beavis has stood up for himself and attacked butt-head. after consuming a large amount of sugar, caffeine or, as shown in beavis and butt-head do america, medication pills, beavis undergoes a radical personality change. he would pull his t-shirt over his head and begin to yell and scream incomprehensible nonsense. this alter ego is named "cornholio", a character whom was conceived when mike judge had a thought of beavis with his shirt over his head. cornholio is a normally dormant personality, but when he surfaces, he is famous for shouting, "i am cornholio! i need tp for my bunghole!" in a faux-spanish accent. once cornholio disappears, beavis has no recollection as to what had happened after he consumed sugar.
