Bruce Johnston brought an acetate of "Pet Sounds" to the UK,
which he played for Keith Moon (who hated it because it "wasn't surf music").
In addition to taking Bruce to a "Ready Steady Go!" episode Keith then took him
to a Tony Rivers and The Castaways gig where the two joined the band onstage.
At the time he was supposed to be gigging with The Who that night
and arrived late for the gig resulting in an onstage fight
which led to him leaving the band briefly.
When Bruce Johnston visited the UK in late May 1966 he brought
with him a couple of copies of the just released in the USA LP "Pet Sounds"
(UK EMI wasn't planning to release it until October, because of this visit
and the buzz built around it, the release moved up tp July),
while staying in London he hooked up with Tony Rivers (big Beach Boys fan,
along with Keith Moon. Even Andrew Loog Oldham is a big Beach Boys fan.),
he was probably was left a copy of the LP, which explains why their next single
(God Only Knows) was released at the same time as the Beach Boys version..

Another reason for the planned October release of 'Pet Sounds' in the UK
could have been because 'The Beach Boys Today' album only got a UK release
in April 1966 despite getting a US. release in March 1965.
And they were still waiting for the release of the 'Summer Days (And Summer Nights)'
album which came out more or less the same time as 'Pet Sounds' in the UK
during June 1966. Capitol in the UK had a lot to answer for in the way
they scheduled Beach Boys album releases in the UK.
