PM Narendra Modi held bilateral talks with his British counterpart Keir Starmer on the sidelines of the ongoing G20 Summit in Brazil. Modi congratulated Starmer on assumption of office and announced the establishment of two new consulates in Belfast and Manchester. The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthen the India-UK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. They exchanged views on issues of mutual interest, including on international and regional issues of significance. PM Modi noted the importance of addressing the issue of economic offenders from India in the UK, as per MEA’s press release. Notably, fugitive Indian businessmen guilty of committing huge economic frauds have been hiding in UK since years. India has been seeking their extradition from the UK through diplomatic channels to get them tried according to Indian laws on Indian land. PM Modi’s discussion with PM Starmer is of much significance as it can speed up the extradition process of fugitive Indian fraudsters. The two leaders directed their Ministers and senior officials to work towards faster implementation of the various understandings.
