'Is the problem that Musk is rich and influential, or that he’s not left-wing?'

In a two-hour press conference in Rome on 9 January, Italian PM Giorgia Meloni was grilled by the local press about her relationship with US President Donald Trump and his billionaire ally Elon Musk.

When asked about Musk’s influence over global politics, PM Meloni asked back: 'Is the problem that he is rich and influential, or that he’s not left-wing?' She added that Musk expressing his opinions, however controversial they may be, is not a threat to democracy; and that election interference happens when 'wealthy people use resources to finance parties and associations around the world to influence policies, as in the case of George Soros.'

Meloni then went on to take shots at German Chancellor Olaf Scholz for his 'interference' in Italian elections, when former PM Enrico Letta visited him in Berlin, by explicitly asking Italians not to vote for Meloni.
