If you want to destroy a nation, Prof. Jiang Xueqin argues, don’t bomb it—flood it with easy money. Cheap credit and artificially inflated currencies can be more destructive than warfare, because they hollow out an economy from within. His central case study is the Plaza Accord, when the United States and Japan agreed to sharply appreciate the yen. What followed was not balance but excess: a tidal wave of liquidity that fueled asset bubbles so extreme that, at their peak, land in Tokyo was said to rival the value of entire countries. Manufacturers became speculators, real estate soared beyond reason, and when the bubble burst, Japan entered decades of stagnation.

Jiang extends the lesson beyond Japan. From the 1997 Asian financial crisis to the Great Recession, he sees a repeating pattern: credit expansion, speculative mania, currency instability, and collapse—followed by even more money printing. In the United States, he argues, the shift from manufacturing to financialization after the Cold War entrenched an economy driven less by production than by asset inflation. Public debt exploded, wealth inequality widened, and the stock market detached from the real economy, enriching the top tier while households sank deeper into leverage.

The warning is stark. Easy money rewards speculation over productivity, inflates bubbles that young generations cannot afford to enter, and concentrates wealth at the top while social cohesion erodes. In Jiang’s telling, the true “nuclear option” in modern geopolitics is not military force but monetary distortion—an economic weapon that reshapes nations from the inside out.
