Hello everyone, I am Dr. Supra Puranik, IVF Consultant at Ankura Women's and Children's Hospital, Pune. Today, I want to discuss an important topic: the right age for IVF.

IVF:
IVF is a medical procedure that assists couples in conceiving by fertilizing the egg outside the body and transferring the embryo into the uterus. This advanced technology has provided hope to many families struggling with infertility.

Impact of Age on Fertility:
Age plays a crucial role in fertility, whether for men or women. In women, fertility starts to significantly decline after the age of 35, with this decline accelerating in their 40s. Men also experience a gradual decrease in fertility with age.

Why Not to Delay IVF?
If you are already aware of fertility issues such as severe male factor infertility (low sperm count, poor motility, high DNA fragmentation) or conditions like endometriosis, low AMH, or multiple IUI failures, delaying IVF is not advisable. Acting sooner increases the chances of success.

Optimal Age for IVF:
The ideal age for IVF is generally before the age of 35. Women under 35 typically have better egg quality and quantity, leading to higher chances of a successful pregnancy. Women between 35 and 40 can still undergo IVF, but success rates are lower and the risk of complications is higher.

Challenges of Delayed IVF:
Choosing IVF after the age of 40 presents several challenges:
Deteriorating Egg Quality: As women age, egg quality declines, resulting in lower success rates, higher chances of miscarriage, and increased risk of chromosomal abnormalities.
Increased Health Risks: Older women face higher risks of pregnancy-related complications such as gestational diabetes, high blood pressure, and preterm birth.

Alternatives for Older Women:
For older women with fewer and lower-quality eggs, there are alternative options:
Ovarian Rejuvenation: Experimental techniques like PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) and stem cell rejuvenation show promise in improving ovarian function.
Donor Programs: Egg donation from younger donors significantly increases the chances of successful pregnancy. This method is safe, widely used, and an effective solution for many older women.
