শ্রী ব্রহ্মবৈবর্ত পুরাণ বর্ণিত শ্রী কৃষ্ণ ও যুধিষ্ঠির সংবাদে এই ব্রত মাহাত্ম্য কথা বলা হয়েছে। যুধিষ্ঠির মহারাজ ভগবান শ্রীকৃষ্ণ কে জিজ্ঞাসা করলেন যে হে বাসুদেব আষাঢ় মাসের কৃষ্ণ পক্ষের একাদশীর নাম কি❓ এর ব্রত মাহাত্ম্য কি আপনি কৃপা করে সবিশেষ আমায় বলুন। উওরে ভগবান শ্রীকৃষ্ণ বললেন যে হে রাজন, আষাঢ় মাসের কৃষ্ণ পক্ষের যে একাদশী তা মহাপাপ বিনাশকারী, মুক্তিপ্রদ উওম ব্রতের কথা আমায় জিজ্ঞাসা করলেন তবে তা আমি বলছি, আপনি কৃপা করে শ্রবণ করুন। এই ব্রত যোগিনী নামে খ্যাত। পাপ নাশক, মুক্তি দায়িত্ব এই ব্রত ভব সাগরে পতিত মানুষের নৌকা স্বরূপ। এই সম্পর্কে একটি প্রাচীন কাহিনী রয়েছে আমি বলছি তা শ্রবণ করুন।
প্রাচীন অলকা নগরীর রাজা ছিলেন কুবের। তিনি যক্ষ রাজা, দেবতাদের কোষাধ্যক্ষ। তিনি ছিলেন শিবভক্ত। প্রতিদিন পুজোর পুস্প তুলে দিতেন হেমমালী নামে এক মালী। মালি মানস সরোবর থেকে পুস্প চয়ন করে রাজাকে এনে দিতেন। প্রতি দিন আনতে আনতে হঠাৎ করে একদিন তিনি তার সুন্দরী স্ত্রী বিশালাক্ষীর সাথে কামাসক্ত হয়ে পড়েন ও আনন্দে মেতে ওঠেন। ফলে তার ফুল নিয়ে যাওয়ার কথা ভুলে গেছেন। এদিকে বিলম্ব দেখে রাজা কুবের তার বিলম্বের কারণ জানতে দূতকে পাঠালেন। দূত এসে দেখেন তিনি আনন্দে মেতে আছেন। সংবাদ পাওয়া মাএ রাজা হেমমালী কে রাজভবনে ডেকে পাঠালেন। হেমমালী তাড়াতাড়ি করে রাজভবনে হাজির হলে রাজা অত্যন্ত ক্রোধান্বিত হন। তার এই অবজ্ঞার জন্য কুবের তাকে অভিশাপ দেন। তুমি কুষ্ঠ ব্যাধিতে আক্রান্ত হও। তুমি তোমার পত্নীর সাথে চীর বিচ্ছেদ হোক্। তুমি অধোগতি প্রাপ্ত হও। অভিশপ্ত হেমমালী অনেক জ্বালা যন্ত্রনা নিয়ে ঘুরতে ঘুরতে শেষ পর্যন্ত মারকেন্ডয় মুনির আশ্রমে উপস্থিত হলেন। কারণ তিনি পূর্বে শিব পুজোর জন্য পুষ্প তুলে দিতেন ফলে সেই সুকৃতির ফলে বৈষ্ণব শ্রেষ্ঠ শিব কে বিস্মরণ হয়নি। তাই তার কৃপায় তিনি এই মুনির আশ্রমে উপস্থিত হলেন। মুনির উপদেশ পেয়ে তিনি এই ব্রত ভক্তিসহকারে ও নিষ্ঠা সহকারে পালন ব্যাধি মুক্ত হলেন ও পাপ মুক্ত হলেন।
ভগবান শ্রীকৃষ্ণ বললেন হে রাজন এই ব্রত অত্যন্ত মহিমা ব্যান্জক। এই ব্রত পালন করলে আটাশি হাজার ব্রাহ্মণ ভোজনের ফল প্রাপ্ত হয়। এই ব্রত পাঠ ও শ্রবণ করলে সর্ব পাপ বিনাশ হয়।

The gardener would choose flowers from Manasarovar and bring them to the king. Every day, while bringing them, he suddenly became lustful with his beautiful wife Vishalakshi and was overjoyed. As a result, he forgot to bring her flowers. Meanwhile, seeing the delay, King Kuber sent a messenger to find out the reason for her delay. The messenger came and found her overjoyed. On receiving the news, the king summoned Hemali to the palace. When Hemali quickly appeared at the palace, the king became very angry. Kuber cursed her for this disrespect. May you be afflicted with leprosy. May you be separated from your wife forever. May you be degraded. Cursed Hemali wandered around in great pain and finally reached the ashram of Markandeya Muni. Because he used to offer flowers for Shiva Puja in the past, as a result of that good deed, the greatest Vaishnava, Shiva, was not forgotten. Therefore, by his grace, he came to the ashram of this sage. After receiving the sage's advice, he observed this vow with devotion and devotion, became free from diseases and became free from sins.
Lord Krishna said, O king, this vow is very glorious. By observing this vow, one gets the result of eating eighty-eight thousand Brahmins. By reciting and listening to this vow, all sins are destroyed.
