Vinnytsia is a city in the west and central Ukraine, located on the banks of the Southern Bug.
It is the administrative center of the Vinnytsia region and the largest city of the historic region of Podillya. Population: 372484 (2015). Vinnytsia is located about 260 km (160 mi) southwest of the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, 429 km (267 mi) north-northwest of the Black Sea port city of Odessa and 369 km (229 mi) east of Lviv.
The roots of the city date back to the Middle Ages. The name of Vinnytsia appeared for the first time in 1363. It is assumed that the name comes from the old Slavic word "Vino", which means "given as a present". This name is due to the fact that Vinnytsia region and neighboring lands were captured by the Lithuanian prince Alhirdas in the 14th century, and then they were presented as a present to their nephews.
