Описание к видео Swan Behavior: Ready for takeoff?

‪@TrumpeterSwanSociety‬
Swan Signals. A trumpeter swan family (2 adults and 4 cygnets) is just about ready to take off for the night roost as sunset nears. How do we know they are signaling they are ready to leave? Synchronized head bobbing!

Trumpeter swans arrive and depart in family groups. As the head-bobbing trumpeter swan family glides by, one adult swan that isn’t part of the family is bumped and after a short display, remains in the water. It will leave with its own family group. You’ll also see other trumpeter swans on the ice begin their own synchronized head bobbing, signaling they will be ready to leave soon as well. Shortly after sunset all the trumpeter swans in this video had left for their night roost area.

You can use synchronized head bobbing as a “trumpeter swan photo tip” especially at swan wintering sites. As they get closer to takeoff, their head bobbing quickens its pace. However, sometimes the swans will be head bobbing nonstop and look like they are shortly going to take off, when suddenly they stop! Why? Something may not be quite right. Maybe one of the family members really doesn’t want to take off. Maybe there isn’t enough open water to take off and they need to regroup and give themselves more room. This trumpeter swan family made several trips back and forth on the stretch of water before they actually took off into the sunset skies.

Our website has more information about swan behavior and flight.
