At the end of this year, the IPL 2026 mini-auction will take place, but even before that, discussions have already begun about possible rule changes for the next season. Star commentator Aakash Chopra has suggested five new rules for the IPL.

1. Bonus Point

Aakash said that if a team wins with a 20% margin, they should be awarded a bonus point, even if it does not affect the losing team negatively.

For example, if a team scores 200 runs and restricts the opposition to 160, they should earn a bonus point.

Similarly, if a team chases 200 runs within 16 overs, they should also get a bonus point.
➡ This would make the game more thrilling.

2. Injury Replacement

According to this rule, if a player suffers a serious injury (like a fracture), the team should be allowed to bring in an injury replacement.

3. Mid-Season Transfer

Aakash Chopra suggests that if, in the first 8 matches out of the 14 league games, a player is not included even once in the final 16 (Playing XI + 5 substitutes), then that player should be made available in the mid-season transfer window.
➡ This could help balance team dynamics.

4. Leg-Side Wide Rule

His next suggestion is that, like the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL), IPL should also introduce a modified leg-side wide rule. Bowlers should get a little margin, because currently even a ball just slightly away from the leg stump is called wide.

5. Power Surge Rule

Just like in the Big Bash League (BBL), IPL could introduce the Power Surge rule. In BBL, the first 4 overs are mandatory powerplay overs, and after the 11th over, teams can take 2 overs of Power Surge with fielding restrictions.
