Rental car scams have exited in Costa Rica since there were rental car agencies. 16 years ago, D'Angleo and I got scammed picking up our car. The price was NOT the quoted price. They knew they were ripping us off, we knew they were ripping us off. We did walk out and went to another agency who was going to charge us even more so we returned to the original agency with our tails between our legs and got the car. What were we going to do? We're in a foreign country we were not familiar with and of course they know this. Bottom line, there's just not a few agencies who do this, there's a LOT and it's hard to know which car rental agencies are legit. And the ones that are, tend to be more expensive, like Adobe. Nothing wrong with that, they are good. But we have a cheaper option who still provides great service, new cars and transparent pricing.

Renting a car in Costa Rica is already fraught with peril if you've never rented a car in Costa Rica before. Car rental agencies with questionable ethics have been operating in Costa Rica since there were rental cars. But now, after a year a half of the Covid pandemic it is going to be even more difficult to find a reasonable car rental during high season.
